Update microchip

If your pet is microchipped, update your contact information with the microchip registry.

Not sure which registry to contact? If you have your microchip number, you can re-register at 24Petwatch.

Submit a report

By submitting lost reports, you can notify multiple area shelters of your lost pet. We also encourage you to visit area shelters and walk through their kennels.

Other resources

It’s crucial to begin your search immediately. Walk or drive your neighborhood, tell everyone you meet about your lost pet, and provide them with your contact information. Let your friends, family, and neighbors know via word of mouth, social media, NextDoor, Craigslist, and posters describing your pet, including a photo and contact info.

Found a pet? Here’s what to do next and how we can help.

Check for tags

If the pet doesn’t have an ID tag, are they wearing a local license or rabies tag? Those can be used to find the owner. You can call the number on the tag, or you can take the pet to a veterinary office so they can scan them for a microchip.

Submit a report

If you want to temporarily care for a lost pet in your home, you should still fill out a found report to help owners find their missing pet. We also suggest you check with neighbors and area veterinarians, hang signs, and post notices on social media sites such as Nextdoor, Facebook, and Craigslist.

Where to take the pet

If you can do so safely, we recommend taking the pet to your local municipal shelter or the animal control facility closest to where they were found. These agencies offer lost pets the best chance to be reunited with their families.

If you can’t safely transport the pet, call animal control for the city where the pet was found.

Humane Colorado shelters are also able to accept stray pets from our community during business hours.

Surrendering Your Pet to Humane Colorado

Our goal is to find a loving home for every healthy and safe animal that enters our care. If you decide to rehome your pet with Humane Colorado, we will take the time to learn as much as we can about the pet’s experience in your home and with other animals. We will also ask questions regarding your animal’s medical history.

We recommend scheduling an appointment if you are surrendering a dog.
Dog walk-ins will be accepted as capacity permits.
